In-Flight Wifi

Here is an article about airlines and wifi:

Since a lot of teams discussed offering internet access in cars, I decided to look around and see how it was provided in planes. From the article, we can see that the majority of airlines actually receive their internet signal from ground towers. Using towers located on the ground is cheaper but has limitations of no a access when traveling internationally as well as over remote locations. There is a company that offers satellite coverage, but at a higher cost.

When driving, there are times that we're going to be driving through remote areas that don't have any coverage - I'm sure we've all experienced this with having no cell phone service. In order to make this work for your car and effective, we'd have to move towards the satellite approach.

  1. Good to know. I was wondering how they have wireless access on the plane. I just came back from a flight on Delta. They charge 9.95 for wireless. However, if you were lucky to be on a plane with a screen, you get other features. For example, I played an "inflight Trivia" game with other passengers on the plane (free)! It was very entertaining and made the flight go by faster.
