Sponsorship set to bring telematics prices down

Here's a new twist to the story. We discussed how in-car telematics prices were high and prohibitive to car owners. Sponsorship could be an interesting way out for car makers to provide in-car telematics at a low cost or even free.

Consider this example - A consortium of corporate biggies sponsor the system at the outset so that you get the system at a low price or even for free. Then, you choose your favored company list from an exhaustive list of sponsors. This list could include Burger King, Starbucks, Holiday Inn, Netflix etc. Now, when you're on your roadtrip you get to see only these companies on your in-car telematics location-based navigation system. So you get to know where your favorite shopping outlets are and these companies get to advertize via your car's telematics systems.

While you might think this list could restrict you only to certain companies and will not show other outlets that you may want to try out, the system could also give you the opportunity to update your list periodically. Of course, impulses, urges and sudden cravings cannot be taken care of through this system and this is a potential disadvantage.
